Opening Sequence — Three Minutes — v3 · Revised

One promise. Eighty-four years. One country. One answer.

A mythic third-person narrator carries the story. Sam Pitroda is the protagonist we watch. He speaks five times in three minutes — each a turning point. The country, his father, Indira, Rajiv, the boy in the village, Manmohan all speak in their own moments. The promise the father makes in 1942 locks into the answer the son gives today.

This revision implements all six priority items from the script review. Foundation, characters, and Sam's five moments are unchanged.

Bonus fixes folded in: Manmohan/Rajiv connection ("एक और आवाज़ — उसी घर से।"), departure why ("twenty-five dollars, a promise"), heart attack connected to Rajiv's death ("doctors were wrong; Sam lived; his friend did not"), and lamp/desk-lamp callback in Act VIII.

How to Read This Script

Continuous opening sequence. A third-person Hindi narrator carries the arc — older, warm, observational, never sentimental. Sam himself is the figure on screen we watch grow up, leave, return, lose, return again, and finally answer. He speaks only in five sacred moments — highlighted in gold throughout this document.

A son of Tikar stood in the prime minister's bungalow and offered to come back for one dollar a year.

A hotel room overlooking the Arabian Sea. The phone rings. Sam picks it up — older now, thicker glasses, an American suit cut for an Indian frame. Cut to the next morning. A bungalow at One Safdarjung Road. White flowers. A teacup. Two people: a young man, easy-shouldered. An older woman with a single grey streak at her temple, reading the newspaper as if it were an enemy.

Half one — the question. A long room in a government building. Two hundred young engineers — most in their twenties — in pyjamas, in kurtas, in the t-shirts of universities they had just left. Drafting boards. Soldering irons. Tea in chipped glasses. Sam at a chalkboard, drawing. He stops. Turns. Faces them.

The receiver hangs from its cord, swinging. A beat of pure joy — laughter spreads through the crowd, a child climbs onto a parent's shoulders to see.

The doctors said six months. They were wrong. Sam lived. But on May 21st — his friend did not.

A heart monitor. A hospital ceiling, fluorescent. Sam, 48, a tube in his arm. A doctor over him, speaking with the careful kindness of someone who has said this many times. Cut: a campaign trail. Garlands. A woman with a sandalwood paste circle on her forehead. A white kurta. A flash. Black. Then — a flag. White. Saffron. Green. Lowering. Halfway. Stopping there.
