A continuous narration in Sam's own voice, woven with the dialogues of the people who shaped him — and the people he shaped. From a hammer in 1942 Tikar to a five-a.m. desk in Chicago, eighty-four years later.
This is a continuous opening sequence — a single emotional arc, not a stitched trailer. Sam's voice carries us from 1942 to today. The dialogues of his father, Indira, Rajiv, the boy in the village, Manmohan — break through Sam's narration at the moments that broke through his life.
Hindi is primary. English appears as projected subtitle, except where Sam, Rajiv, or Manmohan would naturally have spoken it. Times are approximate — the cut breathes.
A bucket of nails. A father's hands — calloused, careful, counting copper coins by lamplight. The lamp wick smokes. Outside, the rain comes down in sheets. A boy of five sits on a wooden bench, watching his father's hands like they are a country he has not yet been allowed to enter.
Sam · voiceover · Hindi · hushed, reflective, today
"मैं तीसरी संतान था। नौ बच्चों में से तीसरा। उन्निस सौ बयालीस में पैदा हुआ — जिस साल देश 'भारत छोड़ो' कह रहा था।"

A montage — quick, breathing. A twelve-year-old boy in a hostel bunk, writing letters home by candlelight. A young man at a drafting board, slide-rule in hand. Then — Bombay. The Gateway of India at dawn. A tramp steamer at the dock, its hull rust-streaked. A queue of men with cardboard suitcases. Sam at the back. Twenty-two years old. Skinny. Burning.

Snow on a windowsill. Sam in a thin coat, breathing fog into a Chicago morning. A diner — he washes dishes in steam. A drafting room — he stands over a circuit board, the only brown face. A blackboard — chalk diagrams of switching matrices. A US PATENT stamp slamming down. Then another. Another. Another. A telephone receiver settling onto a desk. Snow keeps falling. Years pass in cuts.

A hotel room overlooking the Arabian Sea. The phone rings. Sam picks it up — older now, thicker glasses, an American suit cut for an Indian frame. Cut to the next morning. A bungalow at One Safdarjung Road. White flowers. A teacup. Two people: a young man, easy-shouldered. An older woman with a single grey streak at her temple, reading the newspaper as if it were an enemy.

A long room in a government building. Two hundred young engineers — most of them in their twenties — in pyjamas, in kurtas, in the t-shirts of universities they had just left. Drafting boards. Soldering irons. Tea in chipped glasses. Sam at a chalkboard, drawing an exchange — a whole telephone exchange — fitting on a single chip. Then cut: a Maharashtra village. Mud houses. Marigolds. A yellow-painted booth at the centre of the square. STD · ISD · PCO. A black telephone inside, on a wooden shelf. Two hundred villagers in a half-circle, watching it as if it were a saint.
